Hi All, I've recently convinced my employer to purchase a Dell Precision T3400 WorkStation with a nVidia Quadro NVS 290 Dual Head graphics card. The reason I chose this system was because it was Linux 'tested', but I have been experiencing problems. I tried installing Ubuntu to no avail and have asked for help in the Specific Ubuntu Dell Forum: I have now installed CentOS 5, which I believe to be essentially 'RedHat Enterprise Linux 5' (correct me if I'm wrong).

With no xorg.conf, I get a usable X session (though my keyboard settings differ from the default (magic) config which gets used. I intend on configuring Xinerama Dual Head capability in Xorg, but so far, I have been unsuccessful. My experience so far, is that if I run 'Xorg -configure' or 'nvidia-xconfig', seeing no errors, I move the resulting conf file to /etc/X11/ but my system not only fails to get a successful X session, I am left with a hung machine (in which even 'ssh' does not work. I have done 'yum remove nvidia-x11-drv', 'rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf' and am using the system on just 1 monitor. I tried using the nvidia-x11-drv via yum (though looking at it I'm not sure which version). Sorry to hear of your troubles.

TwinView was a bear a few years ago but has matured nicely with the proliferation of the dual/three/quad-head workstations, it shouldn't be that difficult (hopefully). Since you have an nvidia card, you can run nvidia-settings which should open up the NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI. From there, the 2nd down item should be X Server Display Configuration. This is where you can pre-select your monitor layout. It should detect both monitors and have their modle inside the little square representing the monitor. The DISPLAY subdialog box should read Configuration: TwinView. This is the easiest way to get it to work.

Otherwise, you can edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the section named, Section 'Screen' you should have two options for this setup included: Option 'TwinView' 'True' Option 'MetaModes' 'nvidia-auto-select, nvidia-auto-select' See if that helps out at all, of course, you will need the proprietary nvidia driver, which is easy enough to install and worthwhile if you are using advanced configuration or openGL applications. You can get this from NVIDIA website, Drivers & Downloads, it is a pretty seamless navigation of drop-downs.

You also need the kernel-headers and kernel-devel packages installed on your system (yum install kernel-headers kernel-devel). Hey PhillyFloyd, Many thanks for your speedy, helpful and concise response! My previous attempts at using nvidia-x11-drv and nvidia-settings were foiled, as for some reason the GUI to nvidia-settings did not give me access to the multi-monitor stuff which you mentioned (and which I was expecting, since I've done this successfully before, at home).

I used the downloaded nVidia installer and found it to be a very smooth and painless excersise. For the sake of completeness, I will document my experience here. I did this ( if you're following in my footsteps, read through the list before blindly following, as you'll save some time): -.

downloaded the nVidia driver installer as suggested. read all the documentation. ran the installer with ' sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run'. found out that I should have exited X and killed all things glx. logged out of X.

ran the installer again and it still detected some X/glx related programs running. made absolutely sure that no X/glx things were running. Comparer autocad et autocad for mac.
