Less need to backup and transfer stuff over like outlook settings, bookmarks and documents, all the jazz. Last week, I brought a spare hd and installed w7 32 just to see how it's like. It works, but you can notice the sluggishness when closing explorer windows and opening more than 3 tabs. I want to move them onto 7 for security reasons.

Current rig specs off the top of my head are: Socket 939 2005-06 era nforce board, Athlon 3200+ 2 GB of DDR400 memory Windows XP - will be running Windows 7 I was thinking of either grabbing a s939 X2 version, maybe like a 4200-4400+ and those will run around $70-100 shipped. And then I hope this brings within a 20-45% performance boost so it can handle general web surfing like a C2d/Quad/i series. I thought if a 4400+ X2 isn't enough, then maybe an opteron 175 or fx-55 could do? Same prices, etc. The problem is as we go higher up this endangered food chain, the greater prices inflate.

Not too big a deal, but I don't think I can justify the purchase a few hundred for a fx60. Then after thinking about this, maybe I wouldn't get the performance gain I'm expecting out of these processors. I could just go cheap and grab a c2d and the works, but the problem with that path is I need a full set of stuff from motherboard to memory and the whole backup-restore deal. So what say you? Win7 will dissappoint you with just 2gb of RAM.

And no hardware-assisted virtualization will be possible on that platform (although I doubt that's really a problem for a non-technical user.). Personally, I'd say, bite the bullet, and pick up a cheap bundle; maybe a Phenom II, and a cheap Asus DDR3 motherboard with embedded video? Those are only about $150 - and $50 for a 2gb DIMM = $200, $250 with a pair of 2gb DIMMS. Or seriously. Just wait a couple of years, because, even an old Athlon64 is still a very capable CPU. Its just not worth putting serious coin into a 5 or 6 -year old setup, IMHO, unless the parts are pretty much being given to you for free.

I suspect you could probably find someone to sell the athlon64-3200+, mobo, and RAM to, for $50-$70, so your cost of the overall upgrade is minimal. If you go for one of the embedded video solutions, you will also be simultaneously giving them an upgrade on their video capabilities compared to the circa 2005/2006 solutions. You don't need 2GB of ram for Windows7.

For testing purposes I installed Windows7 on a IBM laptop with a mobile P3 1.13ghz cpu and only 512MB of ram. And honestly, it did quite well. I was able to browse the web and do some other basic stuff with NO problems. Microsoft really did a great job with Win7 compared to Vista in the performance compartment. Anyways, that 3200+ and 2GB of ram will run Win7 perfectly fine. So I would not upgrade that hardware at all if they are just browsing or watching HULU or something.

Well, one problem that you might run into is, the NForce 4 chipset that was popular in the S939 days, is NOT COMPATIBLE with Win7. There are no Win7 drivers for it. At least, that's what I've read. If you have a microcenter near you, they are having a deal, buy one of their AMD CPUs for $99 (Phenom II X3 720 BE-good for gaming, or a Athlon II X4 630-quad, good for general desktop usage), get a Gigabyte 760G mobo for basically free, after a $10 MIR.

Then just add some RAM (I recommend 4GB for Win7, realistically, although it will run in 2GB), and you would be golden. No reason to keep running that old of a system.

Were there any devices that showed up as not having a driver? What about the onboard LAN (with the integrated NF4 firewall feature), and the onboard sound? Those are what I heard have a problem, that and the onboard RAID feature. I installed Win7 on a 939dual-VSTA board (ASrock, ULI chipset), and Win7 installed fine.

The onboard audio was detected as USB audio (-VSTA has different sound than -SATA2), and the onboard lan was ULI PCI LAN. It didn't auto-install a LAN driver, I had to find it on Windows Driver Catalog site. Search for 'PCI ULI LAN'. Also, it was only for x64, there is no 32-bit LAN driver that I am aware of for that board.
